What Are Your Favorite Bible Verses?

July 2, 2014 — 24 Comments

What makes a Bible verse someone’s favorite?  It is typically because there has been a moment or moments in their life where that passage of God’s Word met a need at a very deep level.  It may have been a time of deep pain, or a moment of life transition, or perhaps it was shared with them by a very special person.

John 3:16 is special to me because it reminds me of what Christ did to save my soul and bring me to God…

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 8:28 is powerful to me for it has helped me hold onto hope knowing that even when life doesn’t make sense (and sometimes, for me , it doesn’t seem to), God can make sense out of my life…

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

I love John 4:24 because my Grandfather on my Dad’s side once shared that verse with me.  I don’t remember everything about that conversation, but I remember his heartfelt passion when he spoke.  Every time I read or hear this passage, I see his face.  He has been dead for 16 years, but he still is on my mind each time I think of this statement of Jesus…

“God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

I have scores and scores of favorite verses, passages of scripture that have become mile markers in my spiritual journey.  I suspect that before my life is over I will have many more such special verses.  As the Word of God encounters me in the ups and downs of life I will cherish different parts of Scripture that speak to me, shape my views, and challenge me to higher heights.

I look forward to what God will say to me next.

One thing I have learned is this…For you to have favorite Bible verses you have to be a student of the Bible.  You need to do the following…

  1. Read the Bible.  Do it consistently.  Do it expectantly.
  2. Believe the Bible.  Trust that God knows what he is doing and follow what he says in his Word.
  3. Apply the Bible.  As the tread of our lives grips hold of the road of Scripture, let us follow the path it lays before us.  Let’s obey its commands, believe its promises, adopt its views, and heed its warnings.  When we do we see that his word is alive in us and that God is truly guiding.

Question:  What about you?  Do you have some favorite verses?  If so would you share them with us?  You never know, your verse just might become our favorite too.  You can leave a comment by clicking here.

  1. “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalms 46:10

This is part of my day, everyday.

  2. My favorite Bible verse is:
But those who hope in the Lord, will renew their strength, They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

This is my favorite Bible verse because to believe in the Lord, to depend on Him, gives me hope that He will strengthen me.

  3. “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
    Psalm 46:10

  4. I have many favorites but one that I go to often is one that helped me when both Mother and Daddy were in the hospital. Mother in Owensboro and Daddy in Louisvile at the same time. 1 john 1:5

  5. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Psalm 56:3

I learned this verse as a child in VBS and it has comforted me and strengthened me in all kinds of circumstances as a child and as an adult.

  6. As a boy we would have to recite a bible verse in Jr. Boys Sunday School Class each week. As you might Imagine John 11:35 “Jesus Wept” was very popular each week with 10-12 year old boys. Many years later with the death of my son this verse came back to me. When Jesus saw the others weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled which caused him to weep. The true meaning of this simple verse was revealed to me thirty years later, I knew he felt the same for me.

  7. “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in this body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave His life for me.” Galatians 2:20

This verse helps me to stay grounded in the reality of life in every situation.

“Rejoice always, pray continually and give thanks in ALL circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thess 5:16-18

  9. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Eph. 2:10

  10. Here’s mine, technically three verses…
    Matthew 6:
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

I try to remind my kids (and myself) of this as often as possible.

I always go back to Psalm 118, it always encourages me.

  12. Well I was brought up in sunday school, which was o.k. sometimes, we sang songs and learnt bible stories, but i never liked church. I have read the whole bible, I do not like church except at christmas, I do not like the bible, I do not have a favourite passage or story or verse.
I think there may be a creator, but most of the bible is based on non-factual events.
I also don’t understand why christians say the obey yaweh but do not keep the feasts and fasts. I do not beleive in hell or heaven, I found out that hell was a mistranslation.
I find christianity boring, irellivant and probably untrue. Sorry to dissapont you.

    • Thanks for your comment, Jan. I was sad to see that you did not like church or the Bible. I am not sure what kind of church experience you have had. At our church we strive to give people an affirming experience of being in the midst of the people of God. You had mentioned that most of the Bible is based on non-factual events. Interestingly, I grew up outside of the church and grew up believing the Bible was a fairytale. What eventually convinced me the Bible was reliable was when I discovered that in fact the Bible is a quality record of actually historical events. The academic study of the reliability of Scripture was very convincing to me. I was raised to be a skeptic and applied that skepticism to Christianity. In the end I was won over by the Bible’s reliability and compelling message.

I wonder if you would be willing to try out the Bible and church again, giving the message of Christ a fresh hearing. I truly believe God is pursuing you and wanting to reveal His love for you.

Once again. Thanks so much for your honest comments.
      Blessings to you!

      • Thanks so much for replying. Being in that church was distressing (it’s only recently I found out about spiritual abuse) that’s what was going on. I like church at christmas but otherwise I really don’t want to go.
I’m not convinced there is an afterlife or a god waiting for us when we die, I’m not sure which god of any will be there when I/you die.
I try to lead a good life, but I don’t really beleive in god, heaven, hell, the devil, angels etc. So I don’t beleive the bible, I don’t think it’s true.
I think there could have been a creator though.
It’s not possbile to make me beleive something which I just don’t beleive, that’s akin to trying to make me beleive in fairies or unicorns.

        • How is trying to encourage someone to believe something “akin to trying to make” them “believe in fairies or unicorns.” Consider this for a moment. There was a time when people thought the world was flat. Was it important for those who knew otherwise to convince the rest of the race that it was a globe. Absolutely. If something is real, then it makes sense that others would strive to convince others who do not believe. I understand that you do not believe the Bible is true, I once believed the same thing. But would you be open to exploring to see if there is credible evidence to suggest that it is true?
